Fu Zhenghua, the Minister of Justice, met with Federal Prosecutor of Belgium Frédéric Van Leeuw in Beijing on June 13. They exchanged views and reached consensus on issues such as further strengthening pragmatic cooperation in the legal and judicial fields and using their criminal justice systems to combat transnational crimes.
On June 13, Fu Zhenghua, the Minister of Justice, meets with Federal Prosecutor of Belgium Frédéric Van Leeuw in Beijing.
Fu said the China-Belgium relations are in the best period of history since the establishment of a comprehensive friendly cooperative partnership in 2014. The two countries have seen frequent high-level visits, remarkable achievements in economic and trade exchanges, extensive and in-depth cultural exchanges, and broad prospects for innovation and cooperation. The Ministry of Justice of China has maintained good relations with Belgian legal and judicial organizations and had frequent exchanges of personnel.
The re-established Ministry of Justice of China has played an important role in administrative legislation, administrative law enforcement, criminal execution, and public legal services, said Fu, adding that the ministry provides a broad platform for China and Belgium to carry out exchanges and cooperation in legal and judicial fields.
Fu noted that China and Belgium signed treaties on mutual criminal justice assistance, transfer of sentenced persons, and extradition, and that both countries joined the United Nations convention against transnational organized crime and the convention against corruption, which constitutes a solid foundation for legal and judicial cooperation between the two countries.
As a liaison organ for international criminal justice assistance, the Chinese Ministry of Justice is willing to strengthen high-level exchanges with the Belgian legal and judicial departments and establish a communication and coordination mechanism to promote further pragmatic cooperation in the hope of boosting bilateral economic and trade development and the Belt and Road Initiative, said Fu.
Frédéric Van Leeuw said the Belgian Procuratorate will continue to increase exchanges with the Ministry of Justice of China, open channels of cooperation, and promote economic and trade development and personnel exchanges. The two sides will work together to provide a better rule of law environment for promoting the friendly relations between them.
Liu Zhiqiang, Vice Minister of Justice, attended the meeting.
