China has 316,000 people’s assessors

Data from the Ministry of Justice show that China currently has about 316,000 people's assessors, a roughly 50 percent increase since the Law on People's Assessors took effect in April 2018.

Around 219,000 of the assessors were randomly chosen, the most common way of selecting assessors. The rest are citizens who voluntarily applied for the position or people recommended by organizations like people's congresses, the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference or women's federations.

The representativeness of China's people's assessor team has also been enhanced since the implementation of the law, as reflected in a greater gender balance and a wider range of professions, education levels and age groups to which assessors belong.
