People’s assessors attend over 1.55m criminal trials since April 2018

Data from the Ministry of Justice show that people's assessors across China have attended over 1.55 million criminal trials, 7.12 million civil trials and 649,000 administrative trials since the implementation of the Law on People's Assessors in April 2018.

About 18,000 of the trials had significant social impact as they concerned public interests.

China now has around 316,000 people's assessors, an increase of about 50 percent since the law came into force. About 219,000 of them were appointed through a random selection process.
