Shanxi uses online platform to settle medical disputes amid epidemic

After receiving an emergency call in late February from a hospital in the northern province of Shanxi that had reported an ongoing dispute with the family of a patient, the provincial people's mediation committee immediately dispatched mediators to the hospital to deal with the incident.

With excellent communication skills, the mediators quickly diffused the tension between the two sides and then instructed them to settle their dispute through the HAS, the province's online medical dispute settlement platform.

With the help of the mediators, the two sides went through the whole mediation process online and eventually reached an agreement.

Based on the feedback from the committee over the handling of the dispute, the hospital held a staff meeting afterwards in which they went over and analyzed the dispute via the platform, drawing lessons from it.

So far, nearly 1,000 medical disputes happening across the province have been resolved through the platform with more than 600 hospitals in Shanxi having signed up for it.

Sanctioned by the country's medical dispute mediation committee, the provincial committee has been proactively advocating the adoption of the platform nationwide during the period of epidemic control.

Apart from promoting the platform, it has also diligently fulfilled its duty of legal publicity by holding lectures on China's first civil code and the law on basic medical services, training over 10,000 medical workers across the province's health care system.
