BEIJING -- China's top legislator Li Zhanshu on Friday stressed the need to further comprehensively enforce the Constitution of the People's Republic of China to promote the construction of a modern socialist country in all respects.

Li, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), made the remarks when addressing a symposium on the implementation of China's Constitution in Beijing.

To study and implement the Constitution, Li underlined the importance of "two upholds," the CPC's comprehensive leadership and its core position in leading the cause of socialism with Chinese characteristics, among other factors.

He also called for progress in the building of whole-process people's democracy, and support and guarantees for the people's exercise of state power through the NPC.

Confidence in the Constitution must be boosted, Li said, and necessary laws and institutions must be improved to meet the needs of state governance and to bring better lives for the people.

The Constitution's enforcement and oversight should be enhanced, and the spirit of the Constitution should be promoted, Li said.
