The 34th session of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice of the United Nations was held in Vienna on May 19, under the theme of "Addressing new, emerging and evolving forms of crime, including crimes that affect the environment, smuggling of commercial goods and trafficking in cultural property".
Chinese Vice-Minister of Justice Li Mingzheng led a delegation to attend the event and delivered a speech during the general debate session.
In his speech, Li highlighted China's recent achievements in crime prevention and criminal justice under the guidance of Xi Jinping Thought on the Rule of Law, and elaborated on the vision of a community with a shared future for mankind, the Global Development Initiative, Global Security Initiative and Global Civilization Initiative.
Li called on the international community to strengthen cooperation in effectively combating various forms of transnational organized crimes and new types of crimes. He reaffirmed China's commitment to firmly upholding multilateralism and expanding and deepening cooperation with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), other countries and pertinent international organizations.
On the afternoon of the same day, Li met with UNODC Executive Director Ghada Waly, and briefed her on the progress China has made in promoting the rule of law and on the functions of China's Ministry of Justice (MOJ). They exchanged views on the implementation of the action plan for strategic cooperation in crime prevention and criminal justice between China's MOJ and the UNODC, and on deepening bilateral exchanges and cooperation.
Li Song, China's permanent representative to the UN and other international organizations in Vienna, was present at the meeting.
